The Design Director oversees development of all design strategies, concepts, and creative solutions. Responsible for creative operations on each project including team supervision and work production. Manages the design process and maximizes resources. Works with company leadership, project teams, partners, consultants, and venues to creatively guide the design process, lead collaborative work sessions, and create the project direction. A hands-on leader, advocate for creative partners, and experienced presenter. Supports and supervises creative associates; oversees their execution of all creative efforts to ensure they are on strategy, on time, and on budget. Resolves conflict through diplomatic resolution and mentors effectively in a positive, inspiring manner.
Responsibilities:
Develop innovative, immersive, and experiential exhibition design solutions which meet the strategic, experiential, functional, and budgetary scope for each project.
Participate in and lead all phases and aspects of a project, including research and project immersion, strategy, ideation, concept design, schematic design, design development, design intent documentation, and fabrication and installation oversight.
Approach projects from a high-level, wholistic perspective while keeping in-budget, detail-oriented solutions and production processes in mind.
As pertains to the design efforts, work with Project Manager and Production Manager to develop and manage the schedule, operations, and budgetary needs for projects to ensure design resources are maximized and allocated appropriately.
Create thoughtful, clear, and direct presentation documents that communicate design-thinking for the layperson and include our clients, vendors, and creative partners in the collaborative design process.
Provide high-level strategic thinking around exhibition programming, interpretive planning, and experiential and educational content as it applies to the built environment.
Communicate design solutions through story-driven architectural visualization, drawings, sketches, 3D and physical models, and documentation.
Lead presentations, work sessions, and charrettes with venues and creative partners.
Develop design solutions for touring exhibitions that take into account modularity for multiple venue footprints and existing conditions that can be shipped both domestically and internationally.
Oversee the fabrication, production, and installation processes to ensure quality standards are met and satisfy expectations of IP partners as needed
Work with external vendors (graphics, fabricators, AV, lighting, media content) and manage their scope by providing direction and via meetings, shop visits to ensure creative integrity is maintained and meets the original design intent.
Uphold company values, inspire company culture, and set professional expectations so that the studio environment, capabilities, tools, processes, and work style support the company.
Lead a team of designers and planners to move exhibits from location to location, working within new architectural spaces and adapting designs as required.
Required Competencies:
Bachelor’s degree in architecture, or foreign equivalent; Themed Entertainment design preferred.
10+ years of related project experience, with a track record of successfully overseeing project scope of varying scale, including but not limited to; themed entertainment design, museum exhibition design, interior design, architecture, or stage/theatrical production design
A passion for experience design and the built environment
Connected to the creative industry—strong knowledge of industry trends and innovations in experience design
Strong conceptual ideation and collaborative brainstorming abilities
Strong understanding of the design process and documentation from initial concepts through implementation
Understanding of construction and fabrication methods, materials and finishes, and lighting solutions
Ability to read architectural construction documents and shop drawings, and coordinate with consultants and drafting teams, as may be required
Hand drawing or sketching skills a plus
Advanced CAD and/or BIM modeling and documentation skills
Expert knowledge of AutoCAD or Vector based design software
Excellent communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills
Ability to prioritize and concurrently work on multiple projects in a fast-paced studio environment
Ability to meet deadlines, without compromising accuracy, within the constraints of schedule and budget
Flexibility to work both collaboratively and independently on projects of all scales
SketchUp
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
AutoCAD proficiency
Revit and/or Vectorworks
